Our mission
Aquabyte is on a mission to revolutionize the sustainability and efficiency of aquaculture. It is an audacious, and incredibly rewarding mission. By making fish farming cheaper and more viable than livestock production, we aim to mitigate one of the biggest causes of climate change and help prepare our planet for impending population growth. Aquaculture is the single fastest growing food-production sector in the world, and now is the time to define how technology is used to harvest the sea and preserve it for generations to come.
We are a diverse, mission-driven team that is eager to work alongside kindred spirits. If this vision makes you smile, gives you goosebumps, or otherwise inspires you please get in touch.
Our product
We are currently focused on helping salmon farmers better understand their fish populations and make environmentally-sound decisions. Through custom underwater cameras, computer vision, and machine learning we are able to quantify fish weights, detect the health status, and generate optimal feeding plans in real time. Our product operates at three levels: on-site hardware for image capture, cloud pipelines for data processing, and a user-facing web application. As a result, there are hundreds of moving pieces and no shortage of fascinating challenges across all levels of the stack.
Above all, Aquabyte is a customer-driven company. Our product development is dictated by the needs of fish farmers and we prioritize customer delight in everything we do. We are committed to build a global, collaborative team that creates value far beyond Silicon Valley.
The Role
Aquabyte is seeking a DevOps Engineer in our Chile office in Puerto Varas. You will be responsible for ensuring that Aquabyte can reliably and securely control the hardware we deploy at remote Internet-connected farms in Chile and throughout the world. You will improve our deployment process for remotely upgrading the software deployed on our remote hardware and also improve the reliability of the deployed hardware by automating burn-in testing, instrumenting the necessary observability to detect and mitigate hardware failures, and ensure we have the redundancies in-place to minimize downtime at a remote site.
Aquabyte helps fish farmers manage their day-to-day operations by using AI enabled cameras integrated with computer vision and machine learning algorithms to provide biomass estimation, sea lice counting, and optimal feeding schedules.
This role is based out of our Puerto Varas office and involves occasional travel to the United States and Norway.
You should be familiar with Linux, networking, certificate authorities, and deploying software to both ARM64 and AMD64 hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Securely deploy and configure software to remote IoT devices
  • Participate in diagnosing and fixing device issues remotely and implementing procedures and tooling to help enable the field team to self-diagnose and fix issues themselves
  • Improve our redundancies such that the impact of a hardware failure is minimized
  • Improve our autoconfiguration so that field operations do near-zero on-site configuration to install our hardware
  • Improve our observability and monitoring to detect software or hardware issues before they cause an outage
  • Monitor bandwidth and optimize software configurations to reduce bandwidth usage
  • Interface with customer IT teams to deploy Aquabyte solutions
  • Ability to travel occasionally for 2-4 days at a time away from Puerto Varas
  • Fluency in Spanish and English, in both writing and speech
  • Physically able to lift 25kg
  • A valid driver's license and able to drive.

Qualification Required

  • Engineering or CS degree
  • Minimum 2 years experience in relevant role
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP
  • Experience with cloud environments such as AWS
  • Experience deploying to off-site hardware
  • Familiarity with proxies, switches/routers, DHCP, HTTP, DNS, TLS, NTP, SSH and NAT
  • Experience with containerized workloads such as Docker
  • Build and maintain fleet operations tools for monitoring, notifications, trending, and analysis
  • Experience managing certificate authority processes
  • Working experience with wireless networks.

Qualification Bonus

  • Software development experience
  • Experience with NVIDIA Jetson
  • Programming experience in Python, Golang, C/C++
  • Previous familiarity with IT configurations at salmon aquaculture companies

  • Competitive salary and stock options
  • Centrally located office in Puerto Varas
  • Free lunch and snacks
  • Opportunities for personal and professional development in a dynamic environment
  • Flexible working hours and a positive team culture
  • The chance to contribute to sustainable innovation in the global seafood industry
  • The opportunity to assist the world’s largest fish farmers in reducing fish handling, improving fish welfare, and optimizing sustainable food production
