Title: Advocacy Communications Coordinator
Supervisor: Vice President for Advocacy and Threats Programs
Location: Remote/Flexible
Salary: Estimated at $60K-$75k* yearly; Based on experience
Term of Position: This is a limited-term position supported by external funding commitments. Funding will be formally reviewed at six (6) months to assess sustainability and continuation. While ABC intends to pursue ongoing funding and envisions this role as potentially long-term, continued employment beyond the stated term is contingent upon the availability of grant funding and partner support.
The position may include collaboration with the Development team to support fundraising and long-term sustainability efforts.

Position Summary:
This is a limited term position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC). The Advocacy Communications Coordinator will assist our Advocacy and Communications teams in creating communications plans and content to advance ABC’s advocacy goals. The position will be responsible for translating advocacy goals into persuasive and compelling public-facing content that educates citizens and decision-makers alike and engages grassroots action while elevating ABC’s advocacy work in the conservation space.
50% of the position’s time will be focused on our Cats Indoors campaign. This work will consist of identifying an external firm to analyze the Hawaiian media market, developing and deploying strategies to ABC’s policy and behavior change goals in Hawaii and elsewhere, and coordinating with the firm and relevant ABC staff while the project advances.
Primary Duties:
- Assist ABC’s Invasive Species Programs (e.g., Cats Indoors) and Advocacy teams with local, regional, and national communications needs that align with organizational mission and campaign goals
- Coordinate with policy and threats staff to create and implement communications strategies that target policy implementation and human behavior change objectives
- Identify opportunities for, coordinate the hiring of, and manage agreements with external vendors to help meet ABC’s communications needs in target markets (e.g., Hawaii)
- Coordinate with division leadership and program staff to create clear, persuasive content for education and advocacy efforts, including but not limited to:
- Action alerts, campaign messaging, and advocacy toolkits
- Fact sheets, policy briefs, and educational materials
- Press releases, media statements, and Op-Eds
- Website content and email communications
- Foster interdivisional collaboration and support, especially across policy, communications, and fundraising divisions
- Provide rapid-response communications during key policy moments or emerging issues
- Act as liaison with ABC’s Communications & Marketing team
Core Responsibilities
- Ensure all advocacy communications are factual and capture persuasive messaging, reflecting ABC brand standards, values, and principles
- Maintain consistent messaging across campaigns, partners, and platforms
- With the help of Advocacy staff, translate policy and issue analysis into accessible language for diverse audiences
- Support spokespersons with talking points, briefs, and message preparation
- Build and sustain relationships with coalition partners and community stakeholders
- Monitor policy, legislative, and advocacy landscapes relevant to the organization’s mission
- Coordinate communications timelines with Communications staff on advocacy campaigns and grassroots actions
- Uphold accuracy, inclusivity, and cultural competence in all messaging

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, nonprofit management, public policy, political science, natural resource policy or related field (or equivalent experience).
- At least 2 years of experience in nonprofit communications, advocacy, or public affairs.
- Excellent writing and editing skills with experience translating policy or issue-based content.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Thrives in a collaborative setting.
- Works effectively in a mission-driven, fast-moving environment
- All remote and hybrid employees are required to have a stable and high-speed internet service provider in place prior to beginning work for ABC. Our distributed work force relies heavily on cloud technologies, Zoom, and other automations to successfully complete our day to day work. The ideal speeds are 30-40 Mbps for downloads and 10-15 Mbps for uploads.
- You may be required to use your personal cell phone to access ABC systems remotely.
- Authorized to work in the US or Permanent Resident.
- Occasional air and car travel may be required with this position.

Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with nonprofit advocacy or issue-based campaigns.
- Familiarity with advocacy communications including culturally sensitive topics.
- Understanding of legislative or regulatory processes affecting nonprofit advocacy.
- Ability to respectfully communicate on diverse issues with cultural sensitivities.
- Familiarity with Hawaiian conservation challenges, politics, and culture preferred, but not required.
