A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for an Aquaculture Alternative Feed Researcher who can develop novel feed ingredients, execute meaningful feeding and nutrition studies that support program priorities at NOAAs’ Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC).

Primary Function:

Researchers at the NWFSC have expertise in incorporating terrestrial plant proteins and macroalgae into alternative feeds for marine fish. The combination of the two ingredient types shows great potential for the complete replacement of fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture feeds.

Research support for fish feed and nutrition studies, fish and seaweed processing, and alternative feeds formulation is needed at NWFSC to further evaluate the potential of macroalgae feed ingredients to facilitate the replacement of fishmeal and fish oil in alternative fish feeds.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop high-protein feed ingredient from a domestically produced macroalgae
  • Document processing methods employed in the production of the concentrates
  • Summarize findings in a report suitable for publication
  • feeds containing varying amounts of macroalgae protein concentrate each year for use in alternative feeds feeding studies.
  • Formulate and produce alternative experimental sablefish feeds containing varying amounts of macroalgae protein concentrate
  • Assist in feeding studies to include feeding fish to apparent satiation, recording growth, and assaying final fish.

Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on candidates’ availability. This is a full–time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Oceanography with a minimum of 10 years of experience conducting fisheries research and a minimum of 2 years conducting aquaculture specific research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge includes the preparation and award of grant proposals, successful execution of research studies, evaluation and preparation of research results for publication in scientific publications, and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fisheries by-product processing, fish feed development, and fish feed and nutrition research to include the following.
  • Development of novel fish and seaweed ingredients for use in alternative feeds for marine fish.
  • Expertise in the operation of feed extrusion equipment, to include a CW Brabender Prep Center heated single screw extruder, to prepare alternative feeds for marine fish.
  • Successful execution of alternative feeds studies.
  • Knowledge of guidelines established by the National Research Council for the humane care of aquatic laboratory animals.
  • Presentation of research results from fish feeds and nutrition studies at a World Aquaculture Society conference.
  • Ability to confer with other scientists, engineers and researchers to analyze research, interpret analytical results, and write publishable technical reports.
  • Demonstrated ability must include co-authorship on scientific and trade publications in subject areas beyond the contractor’s personal expertise.
