A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.

Primary Function:

AIS is recruiting protected species observers with passive acoustic monitoring certifications to remotely monitor the mitigation zones around pile driving operations and implement protective measures when necessary. The PAM operators will work within a team consisting of three PAM operators covering shifts no longer than 4 hours at a time followed by a minimum of 2 hours off during 24/7 operations with an anticipated eight to twelve hours of work per PAM operator per day. This position is expected to start approximately late April 2025 for an estimated 6 months of work with rotations of 4 weeks on with 4 weeks off. Duties include but are not limited to: acoustic identification of protected species; documenting location, documenting behavior and other essential data; documenting data on logs in an organized manner. Candidates will be selected based on their past experience operating as a passive acoustic monitor and their ability to identify protected species acoustically.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct acoustic monitoring for marine mammals
  • Review and classify detections in real-time during monitoring periods.
  • Present / brief client and crew of the operational vessel in passive acoustic monitoring requirements and methodology.
  • Maintain excellent communication with all project personnel
  • Communicate detections of marine animals to Lead Protected Species Observer (LPSO) at any distance immediately
  • Ability to vigilantly monitor for acoustic detections of marine mammals around observation platform/vessel for up to 12 hours in a 24-hour period.
  • Documenting behavior and other essential data
  • Documenting data on logs in an organized manner
  • Daily data submission
  • Operate and troubleshoot PAM monitoring workstation and software as required

Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated. This is a full–time temporary position. Once you complete 90 days of work you will be eligible for the AIS benefits package. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4-year degree with major in biological sciences
  • Must have passed an approved PSO course/training and provide certificate
  • Must have passed an approved PSO/PAM Operator course/training and provide certificate
  • Must be NMFS approved PAM (must provide NMFS approval letter)
  • Must not be affiliated with any group that may impair the objectivity or the appearance of objectivity
  • Must have proof of eligibility to work within the US
  • Must have offshore experience in the field

Travel:

  • Some travel to and from the training location will be reimbursed. Lodging and per diem will be provided during pre-project training at training facility.
