| Job Description Summary | About URI: The University of Rhode Island enrolls approximately 17,000 students across its graduate and undergraduate programs and is the State’s flagship public research university, as well as the land grant and sea grant university, for the state of Rhode Island. The main campus is located in the historic village of Kingston, and the Bay Campus is located in Narragansett. Both campuses are near major beaches in a beautiful coastal community. URI is just 30 minutes from Providence, RI and within easy reach of Newport, Boston, and New York City. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSITION SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, assist in performing routine research work including field sampling, conducting experiments and analyzing data on materials or specimens. |
| Duties and Responsibilities | KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct research on marine microbes, including preparation and conducting field sampling, aerobic and anaerobic cultivation, and application and analysis of molecular methods including PCR, molecular cloning, bacterial transformation and DNA sequencing. Perform computer tasks related to scientific data processing, analysis, and interpretation, including analysis of sequencing data; preparation of presentation materials; report writing, and data archiving. Participate in field sampling and preparation of oceanographic research cruises. Handle and maintain technical instruments required for performance of experiments. Maintain laboratory safety and maintenance of laboratory equipment. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform other duties, as assigned. LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT: Personal computers and printers; word processing, database management, spreadsheet software, other scientific analysis software, laboratory equipment as specified. | Required Qualifications | REQUIRED: 1. Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry or related field. 2. Research experience in marine microbiology. 3. Molecular microbiology experience including DNA sequencing. 4. Experience culturing marine microbes. 5. Experience with anaerobic microbiology. 6. Experience with oceanographic research at sea. 7. Computer experience (including spreadsheet and other scientific analysis software). 8. Organizational skills. 9. Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills. 10. Proficiency in written communication skills. 11. Ability to work with diverse groups/populations. |
