The Shellfish Health Lab, led by Dr. Colleen Burge at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow with experience in marine molecular ecology and experimental biology to participate in a collaborative NSF funded project Transmission Pathways of Seagrass Wasting Disease in Coastal Meadows. The project seeks to better understand the transmission dynamics of Labyrinthula zosterae, the causative agent of seagrass wasting disease. The candidate will lead molecular analyses on tagged sequencing and quantification of pathogenic and apathogenic Labyrinthula species in eelgrass and environmental samples. The candidate will also assist on experiments focused on oyster 'biofiltration' of Labyrinthula zosterae. Laboratory trials will be based out of the University of Washington, Friday Harbor Laboratories located on beautiful San Juan Island, Washington. Desired Qualifications include: 1) PhD in disease ecology, biology or marine biology 2) Experience in molecular biology such as DNA extractions and qPCR 3) Experience in using diverse programs to analyze large sequencing datasets 4) Experience working with and maintaining marine invertebrates or eelgrass 5) Ability to design and execute experiments involving pathogen challenges 6) Track record demonstrating a commitment to publishing research finding 7) Strong written and oral communication skills with significant motivation to publish in the peer-reviewed literature 8) Strong interest in team-based interdisciplinary science, with the willingness and ability to work independently when required This position requires the successful candidate to participate in laboratory studies at the University of Washington, Friday Harbor Labs for up to 3 months in the summer. Additional trips to Washington state may be required in support of laboratory experiments and to attend project meetings. This position may be funded for up to 3 years. Interested candidates should e-mail Dr. Colleen Burge (caburge@ucdavis.edu) with a cover letter, a one-page statement of their research interests, and their CV. The position is open until filled with the priority of applications received by March 20.
