Phykos, PBC is an early-stage ocean carbon dioxide removal company. We’re building a distributed, autonomous system to grow seaweed on the open ocean and sink the resulting biomass below 1500 meters, thereby storing carbon for 1,000 years or more. The oceans have absorbed more than 93% of the excess heat from anthropogenic climate change, and increasing acidity from ocean carbon is a threat to many marine species. Our carbon removal system cleans, cools, and deacidifies the global oceans while drawing CO2 out of the atmosphere to prevent catastrophic climate change.

You can read more about our approach in this recent FastCo article. You can learn more about ocean CDR approaches, including seaweed cultivation, at OceanCDR.

At Phykos, we are committed to building a diverse team in an inclusive environment that fosters collaboration and growth. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

About the role

We are hiring our first mechanical engineer who will work on a small team, often independently, to further develop our ocean farming systems on all stages of prototype development from concept to field testing new developments, encompassing creative design, hands-on prototyping, and field testing.

Responsibilities Interface with the broader Phykos team to develop the next generation ocean hardware Research design space; model and evaluate product configurations; and design system Make bills of materials; procure components and materials; and oversee suppliers Interface with embedded and electrical systems Fabricate parts, assemble prototypes, and bench test mechanisms and structures Field test systems, analyze problems, and iterate improvements Estimate project scope and time, track progress, keep on schedule, document work

Candidate requirements Baccalaureate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience 4+ years of work experience in related position(s) Mechanical design skills: CAD, analytical tools such as MATLAB or Python, mechanism design, material selection, and structures. Prototyping fabrication experience such as 3D printers, laser cutters, waterjet, mills, lathes, welders, hand tools, or etc. Solid understanding of core concepts including design, mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials, and etc. Must be a self-starter who can work independently or within a team to solve problems Must have good documentation and communication skills Ability to travel 5-15% per quarter

Compensation and Benefits Competitive salary with full health benefits. Early stage equity. A mix of onsite and remote work. Access to the Autodesk Technology Center shop facilities.

Technology We're building low-cost, autonomous systems to grow and harvest seaweed on the open ocean. At this stage, our engineering development is done with commodity materials and off-the-shelf components knitted together with ingenuity, duct tape, Iridium modems, and custom software. Expect to move fast, iterate, and try new things.

Phykos is an equal opportunity employer.
