About the role
We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Research Assistant in Marine Biogeochemistry to join NOC’s Ocean Biogeosciences group (OBG) in a new, open-ended position that will focus on marine carbon, nutrient and oxygen cycling. You will play a central role in a number of exciting, multi-disciplinary projects investigating the drivers of air-sea CO2 fluxes and biological activity in the Atlantic, Arctic and Southern Oceans (including BIOPOLE https://biopole.ac.uk, BIO-Carbon www.bio-carbon.ac.uk, and CLASS https://projects.noc.ac.uk/class-project).
The position will assist research into marine biogeochemical cycles; principally the uptake, transport and accumulation of CO2 by the oceans, its impact on ocean acidification and the role of nutrients in driving biological carbon fluxes. This will be through targeted, high quality, laboratory analyses of seawater using state-of-the-art equipment and methods across both the coastal and open ocean spheres. You will get to support and participate in the fieldwork activities of the team, deploying cutting-edge autonomous sampling systems and sensors, performing at-sea water sample measurements, and contributing to data calibration and processing and dissemination of results through publications and presentations.
You will sit within the Marine Biogeochemistry team in OBG, a diverse, dynamic, and highly collaborative group of researchers investigating a broad range of topics, including large-scale carbon fluxes, the biological carbon pump, autonomous instrumentation, and combining observations with models. Through this work you will have the opportunity to substantively improve our understanding of ocean biogeochemistry and marine ecosystems., and you will be supported in developing your skills and career to achieve this.
About you
Successful candidates will have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent professional qualifications in chemical oceanography or related field, and an understanding of marine biogeochemical cycles. You will have strong laboratory skills, good analytical and quantitative knowledge and experience in data analysis. You will have excellent communication skills, enjoy working in large interdisciplinary teams and exchanging knowledge, and have a passion for marine science.

Location
This position will be based in Southampton. The centre is well connected by public transport and has ample cycle parking in addition to free onsite car-parking.
