The Maine Department of Marine Resources is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Marine Resource Scientist I in the Education Division.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position will act as the lead Aquarist for the Maine State Aquarium, a division within the Department of Marine Resources. The position will perform technical aquarium work caring for live specimens at the Maine State Aquarium.
Responsibilities include:
- Applying aquarium science and techniques to the feeding and caring of aquatic animals.
- Performing emergency repairs to aquariums and life support systems.
- Creating and maintaining displays for the Aquarium and its outreach programs and events.
- Collecting and quarantining specimens and new animals.
- Ensuring animals are maintained in a healthy, humane manner and clean aquariums and associated plumbing, pumps, and filters.
- Providing adequate nutrition to a diverse living collection.
- Preparing food and dietary supplements.
- Conducting routine feeding and, if necessary, cultures live foods for specialized diets.
- Conducting field collection of specimens in accordance with all permits and licenses.
- Handling and transporting specimens.
- Monitoring and maintaining adequate water chemistry in numerous separate aquarium systems.
- Maintaining lab equipment.
- Observing animals for signs of stress, disease, parasitism, or injury and administering appropriate treatments while consulting with DMR staff regarding Veterinary care.
- Maintaining detailed daily logs on aquarium systems.
- Training and supervising seasonal staff, including seasonal Aquarist(s) and volunteers on all aquarist related duties.
- Performing related work as required.
The position will remain current on marine issues pertinent to the DMR, as well as represent DMR and the Education Division at events and through educational programs.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Education in the DMR Bureau of Marine Science.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Entry level education, training, or experience in a scientific, technical, or engineering discipline with demonstrated experience in the field of marine resource research and management or another related field.
Preference will be given to candidates with:
- SCUBA certification and ability to dive using SCUBA
- Ability to operate and generally maintain small boats and equipment for collecting specimens
