The Department of Marine Resources, Bureau of Policy and Management, is seeking to fill a limited period full time vacancy for a Marine Resource Management Coordinator focusing on interstate fisheries management in Augusta.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position will provide policy support to the Director of External Affairs, with a focus on actions taken at the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the regional Fishery Management Councils. The position will work at various levels of fisheries management governance and engage at the nexus of science and policy. Responsibilities will include conducting state rulemaking, representing the state at public hearings, providing technical expertise in fisheries management, and assisting in the development of pertinent laws and regulations. The position will also serve on plan develop teams at interstate management bodies and oversee existing DMR programs related to interstate species, including the Groundfish Permit Bank. The position is forward facing and will include frequent communication with the fishing industry. This role represents a unique opportunity to directly contribute to the effective management of Maine’s valuable fisheries.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training, and/or experience demonstrating technical expertise in marine resource and aquaculture program management or development and implementation of complex marine resource focused conservation projects.
Preference will be given to candidates with:
• A master’s degree in a relevant field and/or a minimum of two years direct experience working in a policy or regulatory role related to commercial and/or recreational fisheries.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
• Ability to successfully convey scientific information to non-scientific audiences.
• Experience conducting public hearings or meetings.
• Experience dealing with contentious issues.
• Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
• Willingness to travel.
