That’s why EDF’s Climate Resilient Fisheries & Oceans team is working to safeguard the oceans and protect nature while feeding the planet, creating more secure livelihoods, and bolstering more equitable societies for human well-being. One of the greatest threats to the oceans is overfishing, which is why our dedicated team of scientists, economists, and fishery management experts are collaborating with partners around the globe to make sustainable fishing the norm.Through our work in the U.S., Latin America, and Asia Pacific, we draw on strong science and economic principles to advance sustainable fishing practices, forward-looking policies and innovative tools that support the health of our oceans and the people who depend on them for food and their livelihoods._This role is 100% remote with a preference in the Washington, DC area._OVERALL FUNCTIONThe Manager, Resilient Fisheries Policy, will be a member of Climate Resilient Fisheries & Oceans team and part of the People and Nature Program at Environmental Defense Fund. The role will manage efforts to advance science and policy solutions to achieve sustainable, profitable, and resilient fisheries, with a particular focus in the United States. The role will be integral to advancing key U.S. national policy priorities including building oceans and fisheries resilience champions and advancing priority projects including securing resources for next generation technologies and modernizing fisheries information systems.The Manager will also play a critical role in working across regions to diagnose key problems, identify solutions, and advocate for approaches for building resilient fisheries. In doing so, this individual will work collaboratively with diverse stakeholder groups and policymakers.This individual will report to the Director, Resilient Fisheries, and will work across other EDF teams including the Political Affairs, Science, Ocean Technology Solutions, and Communications teams. This role will be an excellent opportunity to use policy insights, a collaborative spirit, and research capabilities to advance climate resilience for oceans and fisheries in meaningful ways.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESWork in collaboration with the Climate Resilient Fisheries and Political Affairs teams to conduct research and develop innovative policy approaches and other methods for achieving climate resilient fisheries. Manage outreach and advocacy efforts to advance policy/science/technological solutions to build climate resilient fisheries. Manage key efforts to advance fisheries issues in Congress, including securing resources for key priorities through federal appropriations and building oceans and fisheries champions. Manage advocacy efforts related to appointments to the Regional Fishery Management Councils. Plan and host meetings, workshops, briefings, and other convenings in support of efforts to advance climate resilience. Develop advocacy materials related to climate resilient fisheries science and management including reports, guidance documents, blogs, and other communications outputs for diverse audiences. Manage relationships and strategic partnerships with relevant stakeholders, policy makers, and scientists with the goal of fostering trust, gathering information, developing project ideas, and recruiting partners. Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values Serve as EDF’s representative in external settings such as conferences, workshops, and other venues. Apply excellent organizational, communication, and planning skills by responding to requests for information, helping to coordinate training activities and projects for the team and contributing to reports as needed. Coordinate the development of solutions for climate resilience across other teams, including teams working in other geographies (Europe, Latin America, Asia) and teams working on other focus areas (food security, blue carbon). QUALIFICATIONSBachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Political Science, or another related field. At least six (6) years of relevant experience in fisheries and oceans science and management, or an advanced degree with four (4) or more years of direct experience. A strong self-starter with an advanced ability to work in a multi-dimensional team and partnership setting. Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of small teams in a dynamic and creative environment, meeting deadlines and responding quickly to changing opportunities. Demonstrated knowledge in fisheries science, policy, and management required. Experience working on issues related to fisheries/oceans technologies and climate adaptation/mitigation/resilience a plus. Experience in project management and exceptional organization and attention to detail. Experience working on federal appropriations a plus. Exceptional problem solver who is adaptive, taking personal initiative to identify and resolve problems. Strong research/analytical skills and experience performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work. Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences and an ability to successfully advocate for the adoption of policy, scientific, and technological solutions. Proficiency in the use of PCs, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), and virtual meeting platforms/tools. Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds. Excellent judgment, flexibility, and good humor. Willingness and ability to register as a federal lobbyist.
