Dive Safety Officer (DSO)/Dive Technician II

The Coral Reef Advisory Group of American Samoa is looking to hire a dive safety officer (DSO)/Dive Technician II. This position will coordinate dive research expeditions, encode data, manage project databases, enforce safety protocols, and monitor CRAG's dive team.
Responsibilities:
- Managing dive safety operations
- Manage NOAA reciprocity aspects
- Conduct field video transects of coral reef substrate/fish survey
- Participate as a dive researcher in various expeditions
- Assist the fisheries scientist in fish catch surveys
- Identify, sort, and measure the length and weight of selected fish in the laboratory and field for age and growth studies
- Extract, label, and properly store fish otoliths, gonads, fin clips, and muscle tissues
- Encode data and organize and manage project databases promptly
- Prepare materials before field (e.g., SCUBA gear) and laboratory work (e.g., dissecting tools)
- Maintain SCUBA equipment, video camera, camera housing, and other assigned program equipment in good condition
- Follow-up purchase orders and obtain invoices needed for supplies and equipment
- Keep track of time sheets and organize personal Daily Activity Records
- Manage program schedule and other assigned tasks
- Report to the Program Manager and Chief Fisheries Biologist on projects updates
- Implement tasks as requested by the Program Manager, Chief Fisheries Biologist, Department Director, and Deputy Director
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, Ability, and Requirements:
- Have high coral reef fish species identification skills
- Identification of coral reef invertebrates preferred
- Must be organized in work, have excellent social skills, especially in dealing with fishermen, and have excellent time management
- Experience in working with the fishing community is an advantage
- Can drive a boat, fill tanks, and repair SCUBA gear
- Have experience in coral reef monitoring sampling design implementation
- Have been involved in basic or applied coral reef research and management for at least three (3) years and preferably have worked in the South Pacific (work experience in American Samoa is a definite advantage
- Have experience working with a diverse group of stakeholders, including communities, government agency staff, researchers, educators, and enforcement personnel in a South Pacific Setting
- Be carefully sensitive and have experience living and working in another culture, preferably in South Pacific Island Community
