Position title: Assistant or Associate Specialist (Software Engineer)

Percent time: 100% time.

Anticipated start: Position start date is negotiable, with a preference for February 2023.

Position duration: This position begins as a one year appointment from the start date.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

About the Organization Based at the Marine Science Institute at UCSB, the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory (BOSL) applies marine science and technology to create scalable solutions to pressing ocean health challenges. The research group manages projects that address a variety of marine issues, including ocean pollution, species protection, and sustainable resource management.About the Team The Engineering team at Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory works cross-functionally with scientist-led ocean projects. We support each one in the areas of data management, computer vision, infrastructure, and web tools. We do full-stack development and have flexible development cycles prioritizing needs based on the research mission and project. Some examples of the work include a computer vision pipeline to capture data of plastic and debris, API design and development to provide data that will help industry avoid whale ship strikes, and database management for ship traffic, whale detections, drone videos of sharks, and imagery from the Baltimore Trash Wheel.Role Description The Engineering team seeks a Software Engineer that will work with project scientists to build data tools that will support the Clean Currents Coalition and SharkEye research projects and our technology infrastructure. The primary focus will be managing research data to be adapted for scientific needs. This can range from setting up computer vision inference pipelines, managing and transforming training and prediction data, updating APIs, and developer operations. This person will lead the development of our research data infrastructure, learn how to develop in our tech stack, make code changes, and debug as necessary.The applicant must be willing to balance a diverse portfolio of responsibilities and technical roles, and appreciate the challenges and opportunities that come with working in a small, flexible, and agile team. While all work takes place in a research-centric environment, primary emphasis for the position will be on applied environmental problem solving and not on generating peer-reviewed publications.Responsibilities include: ● Collaborate with project scientists and managers to develop engineering solutions to marine conservation challenges ● Implement code changes to our Google Cloud machine learning environment ● Design and maintain our computer vision pipeline ● Conduct code reviews, write clean code, and update documentation that follows our engineering protocols ● Stay up to date with current software technology trends, share knowledge with the team, and support the formalization of the organization’s engineering protocolsThis appointment includes a competitive benefits package with medical, dental and vision insurance and a UC retirement plan. QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in a relevant field (computer science, engineering or environmental/biological sciences) AND five years of experience in software engineering, data science, or other closely related disciplineORMaster’s degree or equivalent degree in in a relevant field (computer science, engineering or environmental/biological sciences)

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Programming ability in at least one main language (Python, Java, C++, etc.)

Preferred qualifications

● Understanding of how to develop back-end in a cloud environment ● Understanding of how to build and maintain data pipelines ● Familiarity with Google Cloud and development in cloud infrastructure ● Experience setting up machine learning environments and modeling ● Proactive communication, attention to detail, and ability to work independently
