A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is recruiting a full-time Assistant Observer Coordinator (AOC) to support the Galveston Shark and Reef Observer Program.
Primary Functions:
The AOC will be responsible for assisting the Observer Coordinator in supervision of observers by managing their day-to-day operations, tracking their movements while on deployments. Will assist in observer coverage selection mailings to permit holders, assist in database management mainly via quality control procedures, and work with NMFS senior scientists, enforcement, Coast Guard, the commercial fishing industry, administrative personnel, and staff from other NMFS divisions.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Work closely and communicate with Observer Coordinators, Federal Task Managers, and Federal Coordinators. assisting with debriefing, briefing, and training observers.
- Work with observers as primary field contact to address deployment and safety issues
- Oversee and track observer deployments
- Communicate with commercial fishermen and vessel owners about departure schedules, safety, and vessel environment
- Perform final data review, data entry, and quality control, assist with debriefing
- Track observer requested time off
- Writing and editing standard operating procedures
- Compiling quarterly reports to track sea days and trip coverage
- Weekly timesheet quality control and monthly checks on satellite phone overages
- Maintain, track, and inventory gear, providing resupplies or repairing gear for observer deployments as necessary
- Travel to ports to conduct vessel inspections to verify suitability to ensure safe observer deployment
- Make recommendations to increase the program efficiency regarding recruiting, training and safety
- Deploy as an observer as necessary
- Ensure all data submissions to customers are timely.
- May be required to oversee research projects related to observer activities and participate in other research programs, as necessary
- Occasional evening and weekend work will be required to provide emergency support to observers in the field.
- Participate in training sessions and attend scientific conferences and meetings to present results of the program
- This is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties. All personnel may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities as needed.
Compensation: Candidates will be paid a salary to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on candidates’ level of experience. This is a full–time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum of a B.S. Degree in Marine Science or related field of study.
- At least two years of fishery observer experience (including staff/office positions).
- Proficient in MS Office Suite programs (excel, word, etc.).
- Physically capable of maintaining and moving observer gear.
- Possess problem resolution skills.
- Experience with fisheries
- Must be motivated, self-sufficient, independent, and a strong team player
- Must be able to work efficiently with a strong concern for completeness and accuracy
- Possess leadership ability and ensure positive team dynamics.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills to maintain contact with staff, stakeholders, vendors and customers.
- Well organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks in an efficient manner.
- Capable of writing scientific reports and making oral presentations.
- Must have valid driver’s license
- Current certification as a Marine Safety Instructor through Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) or the equivalent NOP required training.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Observer experience, the ability to become certified, or other relevant field sampling experience.
